Training for Transformational Development

LN515
The purpose of Training for Transformational Development is to provide students with a foundation in transformational development, so they can support ethnolinguistic communities to meet their spiritual, social and cultural needs and goals. This unit prepares students to be effective trainers who are able to critically analyse the sociocultural contexts of a development or ministry project, engaging with communities to form strategies for development, including working harmoniously and productively in multicultural teams, and building capacity in others through culturally appropriate training to utilise and expand a community’s language and cultural resources. Students will also participate in some team planning processes that mirror planning processes used in language development projects in field situations. An emphasis is placed on developing a collaborative approach that supports local ownership and management of projects. Topics: • Introduction to transformational development with a focus on language development: theological and theoretical foundations; history and current context • Working in multicultural contexts: philosophy and practice of teamwork, partnerships and leadership • Learning and training in cross-cultural contexts: examining current theoretical models and ways of learning in several cultures, and bringing these together to construct a consistent theoretical framework for cross-cultural ministry • Management and planning in language development programs: using Results Based Management (or similar) as a tool for planning, monitoring and evaluation
