This unit introduces students to aspects of language and its study as a framework for language development work based on an understanding of the nature of communication in human relationships. Students will learn basic linguistic analysis tools and terminology in the areas of phonetics and phonology, semantics, morphology and syntax, communication and discourse studies. Topics: • Language and how we use it • Intro to phonetics – place and manner of articulation • Phonology – contrast, variation • Orthography • Semantics – meaning, context, lexical relations, dictionaries • Pragmatics – inference and speech acts • Clause structure – word order, function • Word classes – noun, verb, pronoun, adposition, number, possession, TAM, person • Phrase structure • Morphology • Situations and roles – state, event, patient, experiencer, agent, instrument • Discourse – genre, participant reference, grounding, plot
