Worldviews and Education

ED960.512
This unit provides students with a critical investigation of the often hidden role that worldviews play in human life and specifically in education. Students will be able to critically evaluate worldviews that are embedded in educational practice in order to be more effective in achieving the learning goals of their school communities in a way that is faithful to their Christian faith. This unit explores the nature and formation of worldviews in educational practice. The aim of this unit is the development of a critical competence that enables students to ground their educational practices firmly in the faith they profess. Specifically the unit will cover • The nature and formation of our assumptions • The relationship of worldviews to educational contexts • Scriptural themes fundamental to the development of a biblically informed worldview • Critical evaluation of the nature and role of the worldviews that shape contemporary educational practices, including those of Christian educators • Strategies for Christian educators of dealing with worldviews embedded in culture • The contrast of secular world views with Biblical ones in the areas of the Purpose of education, the nature of knowing and being fully human This unit is delivered as a split intensive. The class will meet for two intensives, one per school term with the ability to communicate to your peers and lecturer electronically in-between. All learning will happen through your readings and in a face-to-face setting.
