Graduate Certificate of Youth Mental Health and Wellbeing

The Graduate Certificate of Youth Mental Health and Wellbeing is a course for professionals who work with young people and who wish to deepen their understanding of the challenges that young people face, to learn ways to improve their lives, and acquire tools that integrate these issues into faith in Christ.

The course is suited to Christian professionals who wish to extend and specialise their training so they can work more effectively with young people. This includes secondary teachers, chaplains, counsellors, nurses, pastors, youth ministers, youth workers, social workers, psychologists, medical practitioners, occupational therapists, and community development workers. It is offered part-time with flexible delivery to suit people who have existing work commitments.

Where will this lead me?

Graduates of this course will have specialised knowledge and expert, specialised skills to work with young people aged 12- 25 years. They will have an advanced understanding of the key mental health challenges faced by this age group; be able to independently and professionally engage and work with young people; apply key approaches to wellbeing; and have an advanced understanding of youth development and the complexities of identity formation.

COURSE Structure

The Graduate Certificate of Youth Mental Health and Wellbeing is a coursework award consisting of 24 credit points. It is designed to be studied part-time.

The course follows a structured progression common to the Master of Youth Mental Health and Wellbeing and Graduate Diploma in Youth Mental Health and Wellbeing.

Course Outcomes

  • Demonstrate specialised understanding of the key issues and challenges that young people face
  • Apply specialised knowledge about mental illness to support young people and facilitate access to services.
  • Apply specialised approaches to wellbeing that encourage young people to flourish in all areas of their life, including their faith
  • Demonstrate expert skills to engage collaboratively with young people to improve their lives
  • Apply specialised knowledge and expert skills to leadership and areas of professional practice.

Entry Requirements

All applicants will be required to meet Eastern’s General Entry Requirements.

Eastern College Australia values the history, culture and languages of First Nations people and we welcome their  participation in all of our courses.

Academic Requirements

Eligible candidates would have:

  • A related undergraduate degree, with subjects in pastoral care, counselling, psychology, theology, ministry, social work, youth studies, or other allied health.

OR

  • An undergraduate degree that is not directly relevant to this course, together with at least 2 years of experience working in pastoral ministry or a youth specific position.

    Please Note: This course is not open to overseas students to study in Australia.

English Language Requirement

Applicants must meet the English language requirements.

Other Requirements

Pathways

Students are encouraged to complete the course as a logical progression. For example, YH801, YH802, YH803, YH804 can be completed in year 1.

Students can decide to continue their study by adding further units to exit with a Graduate Diploma or Master of Youth Mental Health and Wellbeing.
