Certificate IV in School Based Education Support

Gain qualifications to become a Learning Assistant and support students in the classroom. Help young people, including those with special needs, achieve their potential. Work in primary or secondary schools (public and independent, Christian and secular), or in community education settings and take a step towards a career in Teaching.

With a growing demand for teacher’s aides and learning assistants, this course will qualify you to work in educational settings providing assistance and support to teachers and students in primary or secondary schools, or in community education settings.

Make the most of the distinctively Christian perspective worldview at the base of your subjects, and enjoy the flexibility of full time or part time study.

Education support workers are highly valued. The role can also be a perfect first step towards a teaching career.

Where will this lead me?

  • Work in primary or secondary schools, or community education settings as a Learning Assistant.

  • Graduates may choose to pursue a Bachelor of Education (Primary) or Bachelor of Education (Secondary) leading to a career in teaching.

COURSE Structure

  • For full time students the course will be delivered over 32 weeks throughout the year fitting in with school terms. 

  • Students must successfully complete 17 units – 13 core and 4 electives. For students wishing to study part-time an individualised study plan can be developed.

  • The course is delivered in blended format where students attend a weekly training session at the school, a day of work placement, and study additional resources online.

  • Students will need to complete a minimum of 120 hours of placement in an educational setting. This placement may be completed at the school where they receive weekly training or elsewhere.

Course Outcomes

  • This course will equip you to assist teachers and support student learning in a range of classroom settings under the guidance of a teacher or other educational professional.  

  • You will learn to facilitate learning for a range of instructional groupings, including for those students in need of additional support. 

  • You will learn to source and analyse information from diverse sources, gain skills to work with limited direct supervision and to provide guidance to other workers.

  • Through your work placement, you will practise your skills under the guidance of a classroom teacher and gain valuable experience towards gainful employment.

Entry Requirements

General Requirements

All applicants will be required to meet Eastern’s General Entry Requirements.

All potential students are required to satisfactorily complete a new student interview with Eastern College Australia before being accepted into the course.

During this interview we can discuss your previous experience and training and any credit that may be available.

English Language Requirement

Initial pre-training assessment will be conducted by reviewing the prospective student’s qualifications, online application and/or written application form.

Further pre-training assessment shall be conducted during the mandatory face-to-face interview. Where pre-training assessment suggests that the Language, Literacy and Numeracy (LLN) ACSF levels are below the recommended level the prospective student may be directed to complete a foundation skills course (at their expense) prior to acceptance into the course. 

Other Requirements

Students need to have successfully completed a Working With Children Check prior to commencing their work placements. Some educational institutions may also require students to compete a separate police check.

Eastern College Australia values the history, culture and languages of First Nations people and we welcome their  participation in all of our courses.

Pathways

Further study pathways for those who undertake this qualification include the Bachelor of Education (Primary) and Bachelor of Education (Secondary). 

Students who completed core and elective units as part of this qualification will be eligible for credit transfer in relation to these units when enrolling in an eligible qualification or accredited course. This will create pathways into qualifications and courses in which these units are a part.

Eligibility is determined by considering your level of previously completed study, employment status and whether you self-identify as an Aboriginal or Torres Strait Islander.
