Get qualified to provide assistance and support to teachers and students as a teacher’s aide, education assistant, language worker, literacy worker, or school support worker.

Graduates of this course will have acquired theoretical and practical knowledge related to working in an education support role.

Where will this lead me?

  • Graduates of this course will be qualified to provide assistance and support to teachers and students under broad-based supervision such as: teacher aides, education assistants, language workers, literacy workers, and school support workers. 

  • This may be in a range of education settings, including public and independent schools and community education settings.

COURSE Structure

  • The course has been developed to be delivered over 30 consecutive weeks in a local  school settings.

  • The course utilises a blended format where students attend a weekly training session at the school, a weekly placement at an educational facility, and with the provision of additional resources online.

  • Students must successfully complete 15 units of competency to complete the award – 10 core and 5 electives.

  • Students will also need to complete a minimum of 100 hours with one educational institution in their education placement. The placement may be completed at the primary school where they receive weekly training or at another educational institution.

Course Outcomes

Graduates will have acquired theoretical and practical knowledge related to working in an education support role.  They will learn to complete general administrative as well as operational tasks to support students with learning under the guidance of a teacher or other educational professional. 

Graduates will demonstrate the application of the knowledge and skills they have gained by:

  • The use of discretion and judgement within the boundaries of established policies and procedures.

  • Adapting and transferring skills and knowledge within known routines, methods and procedures and time constraints.

  • Taking responsibility for their own work including participation in teams and taking limited responsibility for the output of others within established parameters.

Entry Requirements

General Requirements

All applicants will be required to meet Eastern’s General Entry Requirements.

All potential students are required to satisfactorily complete a new student interview with Eastern College Australia before being accepted into the course.

During this interview we can discuss your previous experience and training and any credit that may be available.

English Language Requirement

Initial pre-training assessment will be conducted by reviewing the prospective student’s qualifications, online application and/or written application form.

Further pre-training assessment shall be conducted during the mandatory face-to-face interview. Where pre-training assessment suggests that the Language, Literacy and Numeracy (LLN) ACSF levels are below the recommended level the prospective student may be directed to complete a foundation skills course (at their expense) prior to acceptance into the course. 

Other Requirements

Students must have a current Working With Childrens Check for work placements in schools.

Eastern College Australia values the history, culture and languages of First Nations people and we welcome their  participation in all of our courses.

Pathways

Graduation from this award allows admittance into higher qualifications such as Certificate IV in School Based Education Support and may be eligible to enter a range of other higher qualifications offered by RTOs. 

Students who completed core and elective units as part of this qualification will be eligible for credit transfer in relation to these units when enrolling in an eligible qualification or accredited course. This will create pathways into qualifications and courses in which these units are a part.

The fees you pay depend upon your eligibility for Skills First subsidised training. Eligibility is determined by considering your level of previously completed study, employment status and whether you self-identify as an Aboriginal or Torres Strait Islander. To determine your eligibility for Skills First and if you are then eligible for the Concession see Skills First.
