Early childhood education help give children the best start in life.  Quality, play-based learning in the years before school has significant benefits.  For children, it can be life-changing in terms of their future learning success and their social and emotional wellbeing.

From 2022, children in Victoria will have access to 2 years of kinder before school, giving children the chance to enjoy the benefits that come with early childhood education. This will create over 6,000 new teaching jobs – more than 4,000 new kinder teachers and 2,000 new educators across the state.

The Certificate III in Early Childhood Education and Care is the entry qualification to working with under fives in a regulated early childhood education and care setting. It is in that environment, that as an educator, you can play a significant role in building an essential foundation for children’s present and future learning and development. In the first five years of life, a child’s brain creates millions of neural pathways and connections. Observing and helping children in their delight in exploring and being curious of the world we live in, is one of the many joys of working in this sector.

We are a Christian college, serving God in the ministry of education.  We will incorporate Christian principles in our teaching and learning and, most importantly, prepare Christian educators to serve God in Christian and non-Christian education settings.

Where will this lead me?

This qualification leads to the role of an educator in early childhood education and care in regulated children’s education and care services in Australia. Early Childhood educators support children’s wellbeing and development in the context of an approved learning framework working as an:

  • Educator in a kindergarten/pre-school
  • Educator in a long day care centre
  • Family Day Care educator

 

A Certificate III qualified educator can also work as an:

  • Out of School Hours Care worker
  • Nanny working in child’s home

COURSE Structure

  • For full time students the course will be delivered over 38 weeks throughout the year fitting in with school terms.

  • Students must successfully complete 17 units – 15 core and 2 electives. For students wishing to study part-time an individualised study plan can be developed.

  • The course is delivered in blended format where students attend two training sessions per week at the College, do work placement, and study additional resources online.

  • Students will need to complete a minimum of 160 hours of placement in a regulated children’s education and care service in Australia.

  • CHCECE054 Encourage understanding of Aboriginal and/or Torres Strait Islander people’s cultures
  • CHCECE055 Meet legal and ethical obligations in children’s education and care
  • CHCECE056 Work effectively in children’s education and care
  • CHCPTR001 Identify and respond to children and young people at risk
  • HLTAID012 Provide First Aid in an education and care setting
  • HLTWHS001 Participate in workplace health and safety

Course Outcomes

After successful completion of the requirements for CHC30121 Certificate III in Early Childhood Education and Care including a minimum of 160 hours on work placement, the student will be able to:

  • Apply theoretical and practical knowledge and understanding of child development in regulated Australian early childhood education and care sector.

  • Support the wellbeing and development of children using an approved learning framework.

  • Interact with children and adults respectfully in the workplace.

  • Use a range of well-developed skills and knowledge using discretion and judgment when carrying out their work in the context of established policies and procedures.

  • Work independently or under the guidance of others, though in some contexts that guidance may not be on-site.

Entry Requirements

General Requirements

General VET Entry Requirements for all courses at Eastern College Australia.

All potential students are required to satisfactorily complete a new student interview with Eastern College Australia before being accepted into the course.

During this interview we can discuss your previous experience and training and any credit that may be available.

English Language Requirement

Initial pre-training assessment will be conducted by reviewing the prospective student’s qualifications, online application and/or written application form.

Further pre-training assessment shall be conducted during the mandatory face-to-face interview. Where pre-training assessment suggests that the Language, Literacy and Numeracy (LLN) ACSF levels are below the recommended level the prospective student may be directed to complete a foundation skills course (at their expense) prior to acceptance into the course. 

Other Requirements

Students need to have successfully completed a Working With Children Check prior to commencing their work placements. Some educational institutions may also require students to compete a separate police check.

Eastern College Australia values the history, culture and languages of First Nations people and we welcome their  participation in all of our courses.

Pathways

Certificate III in Early Childhood Education and Care is the foundation stone for working as an educator. It is a prerequisite for doing CHC50121 Diploma of Early Childhood Education and Care.

Diploma qualified educators can take on more responsibility in the early childhood education and care industry including managing a long day care centre.  It is then possible to move on to a Bachelor of Early Childhood in order to be a teacher in kindergartens and long day care centres.

Students who completed core and elective units as part of this qualification will be eligible for credit transfer in relation to these units when enrolling in an eligible qualification or accredited course. This will create pathways into qualifications and courses in which these units are a part.

Fees

The fees you pay depend upon your eligibility for Skills First subsidised training. Eligibility is determined by considering your level of previously completed study, employment status and whether you self-identify as an Aboriginal or Torres Strait Islander.
