Whether you’re straight from school or have other experience under your belt, Eastern’s Bachelor Education (Primary) will equip you to make a quantifiable, significant difference to young people by becoming a teacher. 

Throughout your study, you’ll engage with Christian ideas through a core of theological units which challenge, broaden and connect your faith with your teaching vocation. 

Make the most of smaller classes, flexible course structure, and personalised support from our expert, passionate teaching staff. Primary teachers are in high demand, and graduates have plenty of employment options.

Where will this lead me?

  • Contribute to schools and other settings as a teacher.

  • Graduates will be able to apply for provisional registration as a teacher in Australia and overseas.

  • Graduates may find employment in schools as well as other environments such as churches; parachurch organisations; and, government and private enterprises.

  • Graduates may also continue to postgraduate studies in education and a variety of related fields.

All primary and secondary education specialisations are accredited by the Victorian Institute of Teaching (VIT) using the national accreditation standards. This means that these qualifications will be accepted for school teacher registration in Victoria and all other Australian states and territories.

COURSE Structure

Students will complete 32 units (6cp each) consisting of the following:

Core

Students will complete all 21 units in the following areas:

  • Christian Foundations for Educators
  • Education (General)
  • Education (Primary)
Major

Students will complete 6 units in one of the following majors:

  • English
  • History
  • Humanities
  • Mathematics
Minor

Students will complete 3 units in one of the following minors:

  • English
  • History
  • Mathematics
Specialisation

Students will complete 2 units in one of the following specialisations:

  • Specialisation 1 (English Focus)
  • Specialisation 2 (Mathematics Focus)
Professional Experience

Students must complete integrated professional experience units/90 days of satisfactory teaching practice. They must successfully complete the Eastern College Australia’s Teaching Performance Assessment (A3TPA). Students are also required to complete professional experience orientation provided by the School of Education prior to undertaking any professional experience.

First-year requirement 

Students must undertake the Literacy and Numeracy Test for Initial Teacher Education (LANTITE) within the first 50% of their course program. Click here for more information regarding LANTITE.

Course Outcomes

  • Apply broad and coherent knowledge of learning theory, and the physical, social-emotional, intellectual and spiritual development of students from 4 – 12 years old and how they learn.

  • Demonstrate and apply coherent knowledge of primary school contexts, contemporary Australian and Victorian Curriculum, and pedagogical content knowledge to create, plan for, and implement effective teaching and learning to support diverse learners.

  • Create and maintain supportive, safe and inclusive learning environments, including in the integration of ICT.

  • Assess and use assessment to provide feedback, report on student learning, and inform planning and teaching for students’ learning needs.
  • Take responsibility and accountability for their own learning to identify, engage in and apply professional learning and reflective practices, individually and collaboratively.

Entry Requirements

The College is committed to ensuring that potentially high-quality employable graduates are admitted to the College in line with State and national expectations. These high standards and the successful completion of all the studies enable students to be able to be registered by the Victorian Institute of Teaching upon successful completion of the course.

All applicants will be required to meet Eastern’s General Entry Requirements.

Academic Requirements

Current or Recent Year 12

  • ATAR Based Admission
    Minimum ATAR required for consideration to enter in next intake 70 or equivalent in the International Baccalaureate, VCAL or  international studies.

  • Other Admission Options
    Students who had exceptional circumstances in the completion of their secondary studies may be admitted with evidence of difficulties from the secondary institution, medical practitioners and/or other professionals who can attest to the impact upon the prospective student’s ATAR.

VET Study

  • Students must have successfully completed a Certificate IV or above.

Higher Education Study

  • Students with previous higher education study, including successful completion of Eastern College Australia’s Diploma of Arts may be admitted to the course.

  • Advanced standing may be granted for a maximum of 96 credit points in recognition of studies completed at a University recognised under Section 4.4.2 and 4.3.33 of the Education and Training Reform Act 2006.

  • To be admitted under this category the applicant must provide evidence that the qualifications held are recent and relevant to the course for which application is being made and demonstrate an ability to read and write in English at a level necessary to satisfactorily study an undergraduate degree.

  • Where the student is transferring from an Eastern College Australia award which requires a lower level of English Proficiency, the student will not be admitted to the BEd(Primary) until they meet the English Proficiency requirements.

Work and Life Experience

  • Require secondary studies demonstrating an ATAR (or equivalent) of 70 or above or Recognition of Prior Learning at a level equivalent to Certificate IV or higher. Applicants may also choose to complete Eastern College Australia’s Diploma of Arts which may give up to one year’s advanced standing into the Bachelor of Education.

Interview

All applicants will be interviewed as part of the application process. During the interview, applicants will be asked the following questions and assessed as to their suitability for entering the teaching profession.

  • All students will be required to complete a Working With Children Check (WWCC) prior to commencing their professional experience. Overseas students can obtain the WWCC after arriving in Australia.

Recognition of prior learning (RPL)

You may be entitled to credit for prior learning, whether formal or informal. Formal learning can include previous study in higher education, vocational education, or adult and community education. Informal learning can include on the job learning or various kinds of work and life experience. Credit can reduce the amount of study needed to complete a degree.
