Professional Experience: Primary (30 days)

PR731
The fourth and final professional experience is a block of 30 consecutive days in a primary school, and is completed during the final semester of study. The aim for this teaching block is for you to operate as independent yet supervised teachers. You will ideally move quickly through an orientation and team teaching model with your supervising teacher and have full control of the class learning environment for at least 25 days. As you progress through the professional experience, you are expected to demonstrate increasing competence and professional growth as a teacher and are encouraged to become well immersed with school life. You are also required to incorporate ICT in your teaching, learning and administration practices displaying improving personal proficiency. During the placement your supervising teacher will provide advice and support and will assess your teaching against the Australian Professional Standards for Teachers at the graduate level. By the end of this professional experience you are required to demonstrate that you are ‘ready to teach’ by satisfactorily meeting all of the Australian Professional Standards for Teachers at the graduate level. The College in consultation with the supervising teacher will make the final determination of your capabilities. Through this professional experience you will focus on developing a reflective practice in order to improve classroom practices. On campus classes will introduce the teaching performance assessment. During your placement you will reflect on and evaluate your practices and their impact on students, and your progress towards the Australian Professional Standards for Teachers at the graduate level. On campus classes prior to and after the placement will prepare you for the placement, and enable you to debrief after its completion and prepare for transitioning into the profession. Through reflection on your journey as a teacher candidate, you will discuss strategies to transition into the teaching profession with an understanding of employment contracts, registration with the Victorian Institute of Teaching, and the graduate teacher status. Topics: * Reflective Approaches to Improving Practice * Measuring impact and progress against the Australian Professional Standards for Teachers * Preparing for the final professional experience * Preparing for the teaching performance assessment * Debriefing and reflecting on the professional experience * Preparing to transition into the profession * Teacher registration and engagement with representatives of the sector
