This unit explores the changing context of the 21 Century and the need for students to develop resilience, flexibility, self-directed, life-long learning. The Australian Curriculum has acknowledged that there are various skills, perspectives and ways of being that go beyond the 8 key learning areas. It has tried to address these as General Capabilities. The capabilities listed in the Victorian Curriculum are: Critical and Creative Thinking; Ethical; Intercultural; Personal and Social. The unit introduces all these capabilities and the 4 C’s of Creativity, Critical thinking, Collaboration and Communication. Schooling particularly from a Christian perspective shifts the focus from information to formation. This means a focus on character and values. None of these areas are the responsibility of a specialist but is a shared responsibility across the secondary staff. This unit explores some of the strategies and resources secondary school teachers can use to address these goals of education.
