Professional Development Day - Differentiation in Response to Diversity

Differentiating practices is an essential response to the student diversities that exist in all classrooms in order to provide inclusive learning opportunities for all students. This professional development day will cover the principles and characteristics of differentiation, and practices for applying these to the elements of content, process, product and affect in response to students' need and diversity in readiness, interest and learner profile.

Presenter and workshop facilitator: Sarah Michael, Director of the Undergraduate Education Courses at Eastern College Australia, who has been teaching on differentiation for the past five years to pre-service teachers.

Topics:

  • Principles and characteristics of differentiation
  • Understanding and responding to student variance - diversity in readiness, interest and learner profile
  • Applying differentiated practices to the elements of content, process, product and affect

The day will entail interactive presentations and opportunities to workshop with other attendees to plan for differentiation.

You will learn that 'differentiation' is not a set of strategies to implement in your teaching in order to differentiate according to students' abilities, but rather, that it is a way of thinking about teaching and learning with a knowledge of your students in mind so that you can pro-actively plan learning opportunities that are respectful of student diversities and that are inclusive for all students.

This professional development opportunity contributes to meeting the professional development requirements for VIT renewal of registration relevant to the Professional Knowledge and Professional Practice domains of the Australian Professional Standards for Teachers. This professional development specifically addresses 1.3, 1.5, 3.1 and 4.1 of the APST.
